Great Expectations Final Outcomes

I started up on this project believing that I would for the final outcome create my own version of each of the characters, as I usually find this the most interesting and somewhat easier than any other task. I instead gave myself the challenge of designing a new cover of the classic novel by Charles Dickens. As I had been thinking more about the different ways of interpreting the story, especially in a modern context, I aimed to create the cover design with this in mind. I experimented with printing on different types of paper, to visualise my concept of how, if it were a physical book, what the finished product would look like and how it would be bound.

Great Expectations research

I remember seeing the BBC version of Great Expectations when I was eight years old, and had a terrifying memory of Mrs Havisham hanging by her neck, a vision Pip has after visiting her for the first time. Still my favourite version of the classic.

New York, New York

The Apple of my eye. My heart and soul yearns to be in you when I'm not. I dream of New York constantly.

My intention of the trip was to leave London, to escape from what has become a reality of living and breathing the London air. Thick smog and a broken down soul. London has become my home since first arriving in 2010.

Five long years. Ups and downs.

To coincide with the Great Expectations project, I wanted to do something a little different and take the opportunity to put myself in Pip's shoes to go on my own journey into the big(ger) smoke of New York. What is a young woman's journey to be when travelling and finding her way in the world?

Along with me I brought my trusty Leica, believing the unpredictability of 35mm would be able to capture some or all of my time in the city and surrounds.
